Gothic Literature

Gothic Literature

Research the following terms:

Gothic Literature-The origins of Gothic literature can be traced to various historical, cultural, and artistic precedents. Figures found in ancient folklore, such as the Demon Lover, the Cannibal Bridegroom, the Devil, and assorted demons, later populated the pages of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Gothic novels and dramas.

Romanticism- Romanticism has very little to do with things popularly thought of as "romantic," although love may occasionally be the subject of Romantic art. Rather, it is an international artistic and philosophical movement that redefined the fundamental ways in which people in Western cultures thought about themselves and about their world.

Act one- The story starts out with all of the girls getting together led by Abgail to go try to uprise the sprits from the woods with Tituba. The reason they were dancing is because they were sick of being told what to do and also Mrs. Putnam has had 8 kids and 7 of them have died so they were trying to arise there spirits. Parris hears the noises from the girls and goes out to see whats going on he. He sees all the girls dancing in the woods and sees a naked girl also. He goes into Salem and explains to them what he saw. The next day Mrs. Putnams only daughter,Betty, wouldnt wake. Thats when they call in Rev Hale to see what is wrong with her. He looks at her and explains to her that something is inside of her with type of witchcraft. They turned to Abagail and asked her questiosn about betty and the witchcraft. Abagail denied it all and explained that some of the people in the town were inflicting Betty. One of Abagails most hated peoples was Elizabeth Procter she used to be John and Elizabeths protcers maid but she didnt go to church much and she had a thing with John so Elizabeth wanted her out of the house and to work for someone else. Abagails main victim was Elizabeth because she wanted to be with John and the only way to do that was to get Elizabeth killed.
Act 2: Right from the start of Act 2 there are already 14 people accused of witchcraft and if they dont confess they will be hung for the whole town to watch. Abagail blamed Elizabeth and they were sent to talk to the Reverend. Revered Hale asked John and Elizabeth all sorts of questions. One of the questions was say the 10 commandments to the Reverend. John went to church often but not regulary. He answered most of the commandments fluently and was having no problems. Than the last one stumped him and his wife elizabeth had to lean over to him and tell him "Thall shall not commit adultry" this is significant because John did break this commandment. This made it a big target that Elizabeth could be a witch becuase her husband didnt even know the commandments. While Mary warren was in court she gave Elizabeth a doll that had a pin it. She gave it to her because they were playing a trick on her because Abagail than put a pin in her stomach so it looked like when she put the pin in the voodoo doll it stabbed her.
Act 3- Act three was when all the girls had to go to court along with John and Elizabeth Procter. This is when Elizabeth had to talk to the court and tell them what she knows and what she has done. She explains to them that she has done nothing to harm the little girls and she doesnt believe in whichcraft because she is very reiligous. At this point the girls fake that Elizabeth Procter but a cold wind on them becuase they think that she is lying.]
Act 4- Now most of the people that were cowards and didnt believe in there morals were confessing just so they could have there lifes and live in jail. John procter took his wifes place and is hanging himself because he believes in his morals and doesnt want his wife to take the blame for something that he knows for a fact that she doesnt do. John Procter died for what he believed in and was a hero in Salem.

The Crucible notes

Elements of plot in drama.
Foil- a minor character whose traits contrast sharply from those of the main character.
Monologue- a long speech spoken by a single character to themselves or the audience.
Soliloque- a monologue where a character thinks a loud
Aside- A character speaks directly to the audience but others cant hear them.

The judgement of a church member is enough to sentence someone to death. Back than if you were a church member and you were testifying against the non church member you would win 100% of the time. People thought that because you were an active church member you wouldn't lie. They were also Puritans and they are crazy religious and nobody would think that they would lie. Abigail was the leader of the girls and she was trying to kill Procter's wife because she liked him and by doing that she was telling the court that she has infected them with witchcraft. The evil girls said that they were hallucinating. While Elizabeth's was being testified Procter went in and said that he was guilty and confessed. He did this because he knew if he did it would save a lot of people just not him. He made a Sacrifice for his town and most of all his wife.He was later killed. Abigail ran away because everyone found out that her and her group were faking and if she didn't disappear from Salem.

salem witch trials and the puritans.

The Salem witch trials deal with believing and acting witchcraft. The trails happened in 1962.From June through September of 1692 there was 19 people that were all convicted with witchcraft. They were all sent to Gallows Hill near Salem village to be hung. It all happened when a little girl was sick and nothing could get her better. So the parents called the doctor and he said it was a case of witchcraft.

The Puritans were a group of people who grew discontent in the Church of England and worked towards religious, moral and societal reforms. They are very religious it showed it in the book we read Of Plymouth Plantation. it showed it because they left where they lived because they wanted to have there free religion because that's what they worked towards and wanted.

The Indians were not treated nicely but they cared and helped out other people. When the Pilgrims were cold and hungry the Indians gave them shelter and food and started Thanksgiving that we still celebrate today.
In every story that we read had different rituals. I learned that Indians and Pilgrims both celebrated thanksgiving because it was very big in Indians tradition and they showed the Pilgrims the way.

learned that they were heading for cape cod but there boat got blown off coarse and they got blown to Plymouth rock.
